Riviera Country Club

Rivkin Golf Riviera ReviewIn this edition of Mark Rivkin’s top golf courses we wanted to review a course that PGA Tour professionals rate as number three on the tour. The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California is located in a community within the city limits of Los Angeles. The course itself is actually located in the Santa Monica Canyon, just below the Santa Monica Mountains and within walking distance of Sunset Boulevard. Noted for its magnificent beauty and challenging design, the par 71, 7,279 yard Riviera Country Club golf course is recognized as one of the finest on the PGA Tour. Let’s have a brief look at the history of this fine golf course.

In the early 1920’s, golf in California was quickly gaining popularity, and Los Angeles Athletic Club Vice President Frank A. Garbutt wanted to create a world-class golf course to be affiliated with his athletic organization. The designer chosen was golf course architect George C. Thomas, Jr., who had recently designed the nearby Bel-Air Country Club. After considering fifteen possible course layouts, Thomas chose the design that would best fit the barren Santa Monica Canyon terrain, and he brought on-board William P. Bell as Construction Supervisor. Renowned golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie also offered his input as he monitored course construction. By-laws were written and in 1927 the country club and course opened for play as the Los Angeles Athletic Club Golf Course.
