After delays last week thanks to an Arizona snowstorm out of left field, match play was completed at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain this weekend. The prestigious WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship at the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course commenced following a string of wacky weather issues this year which have put a damper on the PGA tour. The 2013 Northern Trust Open took place this past weekend at the beautiful Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, and the exciting sudden death finish kept golf fans on the edge of our seats until the very end. Former UCLA Pac-10 champion and hometown hero John Merrick topped Charlie Beljan on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff for a tournament victory; a win which also earned him 500 FedExCup points and propelled him into the top five on the FedExCup leader board. Obama & Woods Meet at the Floridian National Golf Club

Rivkin Golf Woods & ObamaIn golf news, United States President Obama played a round today with a foursome that included Tiger Woods, Ron Kirk (a U.S. trade representative) and Jim Crane (a Democratic donor who owns the Houston Astros as well as the golf club at which the four played). The round concluded the President’s trip to Florida this weekend and the four played the Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City.

As enjoyable as it is every year, the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in California did not disappoint in 2013, and Mark Rivkin Golf reports on the results of the celebrity golf tournament. The atmosphere was as exciting as ever with celebrity antics for everyone’s entertainment as well as first-class competition on the course from today’s top professionals. Brandt Snedeker played some of his best golf and an outstanding performance Sunday that ended with a 7-under 65 (-19 for the tourney which broke the tournament record by one shot held by Mickelson-2007 & Mark O’Meara-1997) was good enough for a two-shot victory over Chris Kirk in the 2013 Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Phil Mickelson’s win at TPC Scottsdale this past weekend propelled the seasoned veteran back into the Official World Golf Rankings top ten, where Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Luke Donald top the leader board. Now Mickelson hopes to ride on this success and defend last year’s Pebble Beach win at the 2013 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which takes place February 4-10. A $6.5 million purse (over a million bucks to the winner) and 500 FedExCup Points await golf’s top professionals at the end of the Pebble Beach classic. Brandt Snedeker currently sits at the top of the leader board in FedExCup Points, but Brian Gay, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson aren’t far behind. Read More …

Keeping up with the latest news from the course, Mark Rivkin Golf reports on the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which recently took place at the lovely TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course in Scottsdale, Arizona. The four day PGA Tour event was as exciting as ever and Phil Mickelson’s total score of -28 was more than enough for the win, capping off his third Phoenix Open victory, as well as his 41st career title. The excitement of one of golf’s most prominent annual events included a score of tournament records being either tied or broken; four of which were broken by the tourney champion, Mickelson. The event also set attendance records on the second and third days of play with a combined two-day gallery of over 300,000.
