John Merrick wins the 2013 Northern Trust Open

The 2013 Northern Trust Open took place this past weekend at the beautiful Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, and the exciting sudden death finish kept golf fans on the edge of our seats until the very end. Former UCLA Pac-10 champion and hometown hero John Merrick topped Charlie Beljan on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff for a tournament victory; a win which also earned him 500 FedExCup points and propelled him into the top five on the FedExCup leader board.

Charlie Beljan was the 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur champion and a 2007 All-American at New Mexico, and he actually earned his first PGA Tour title last November. Check out the final results and highlights of the tournament HERE.

What was really great about the tournament this weekend though, is that the Northern Trust Open charities were able to generate over $270,000 for non-profit organizations in the greater Los Angeles area through TICKETS Fore CHARITY, and this is something any philanthropist like Mark Rivkin can certainly appreciate. The charities that participated were able to generate just over $220,000 in ticket sales, and Northern Trust added an additional $50,000 as a bonus donation for the top-earning charities. This year’s TICKETS Fore CHARITY total set a record for the most generated in the program’s four-year history, compared to: $91,360 in 2010; $217,535 in 2011; and $253,180 in 2012. The Northern Trust Open golf tournament was first played in 1926, though it was originally known as the Los Angeles Open, then later the Nissan Open. It takes place every February in Pacific Palisades, California, and the tournament has been contested at the Riviera Country Club on a near-continuous basis for nearly forty years. Nissan was the original sponsor of the tournament for two decades, but Northern Trust Corporation, which is based in Chicago, has been the title sponsor of the event since 2008.
